Cat Douglas

Hello, I’m Cat

I listen, I design, I create.

I’m based at my home studio in Warwickshire either for direct clients or I run about supporting various agencies. No day is the same as a freelance designer!

I won a 1st prize D&AD student award back in my uni days, that’s the yellow pencil. Since then I’ve collected a decade of experience in design for print, branding and logo design, front-end web design and magazine design, plus I’m happy to artwork to supply.

In a past role I was Art Director for two magazines including IDFX interior design magazine and have experience designing new templates from scratch. I enjoy an efficient file setup and keeping organised, I like being able to reply promptly and flex to an agency’s working processes.

Having benefited from a varied placement foundation, I’m a life-long learner which gains me adaptable skills and means I’m pretty versatile with style. I value collaboration with colleagues, so I’m best able to express my passion for design whilst being an asset to the project as a whole.

I work with you to ask questions to define the visual direction. For me, making a difference to the impact of your communications and the potential of the business is what matters. I believe that persisting through the details with an eye on the overall picture, is what can bring about great work.

As a culture vulture, I feast on creative inspiration. When I’m not making suspect word play jokes, I’m learning to play Zelda on the piano or stripping wallpaper, having been known to intensively delve into my projects, whether it’s a new brand ID or the DIY.

If you’d like to find out more about how my process works or discuss how we might work together, please get in touch!

Experience

Since April 2012, I’ve been doing the freelancing thing, juggling a variety of brands with direct clients or by supporting an agency’s clients in their studio such as at Vital Marketing, CAB Studios, Phoebus Associates, etc. Projects vary from print pieces to textiles and magazines to full branding.

D&AD Student award 2006

Since July 2012
As a regular, I’ve designed for beer brands like Hobgoblin, Banks’s, Wainwrights. I’ve been involved with many types of work such as print, editorial, adverts, web banners, POS signs, large format banners for their wide range of brands, always within estimated time as a team player, ready to take on any challenge.
June 2012
I developed the identity for Hardlight studio for the international game developer SEGA. The mark had to represent a variety of game genres on digital platforms and elucidate a sense of movement with the potential to animate.
Nov 2008 to Mar 2012
I created many design-led and B2B titles, including as Art Director for monthly mags idfx and Eat Out. A quick hand-over for idfx meant converting files to InDesign, working in a new team and successfully designing my first issue in just 9 days. Organising time with teammates, I completed work quicker than expected, developed logos, layouts and promos for a smashing result. I also initiated improvements to efficiency, process and design.
Feb to Mar 2008
At this agency placement I was involved in hands-on design work on visuals for Wonderbra and Garnier sun screen advertising campaigns, and a worldwide Oral B advert to complement a series of TV ads. I also designed an Identity for Kingfisher Playgroup Kingham.
May to Jun 2007
At this agency placement I delivered packaging design mock-ups for Gü Chocolate Puds, Dorset Cereals new product launch and goodie bag design as well as a Deliverance van wrap. Also involved in competitor research and creating visual mock-ups for packaging development.
Mar to Apr 2007
Demonstrated skills in concept generation and design research for the CBRE annual report presentation and designed food product packaging, as well generally supporting the studio.
Aug to Sep 2006
Refined type and images on Carlsberg packaging, mocked up visuals for a Dove pitch that was later won. Brainstormed in a team for a Heinz advert campaign, contributed ideas to Côte d’Or chocolate, Ribena and a new ambient idea for Streetcar advertising which the client was enthused by.
